WATER ANALYSIS

Water is very important. We take water for granted and usually don’t realize how important water is until it isn’t good or safe to use.

DB Water Solutions will provide you a free in home testing of your water to determine your water’s chemistry. We also provide laboratory collection for testing of heavy metals, bacteria, arsenic, uranium, and full mineral or metals analysis for more complex situations.

Frosty Glassware or Hard Water Spots

These are caused when there is hardness in your water’s chemistry. Calcium and magnesium are two common minerals that make up hardness. Hard water can occur in private well water and municipally supplied water. If your hot water has less pressure than the cold, if your white laundry is a little gray, if your dish soap does not “suds up” then you may have hard water causing problems in your home. Hard water can be fixed, treatment options will depend on your water chemistry.

Rotten Egg Smell

Sulfur gas, more commonly called “rotten egg smell” is caused by hydrogen sulfide gas. Hydrogen sulfide produces an offensive “rotten egg smell” odor in the water. A nuisance, hydrogen sulfide has an offensive odor, but can also be corrosive to metals, it can tarnish silverware and cookware. Hydrogen sulfide can also cause yellow or black stains on water fixtures. Hydrogen sulfide can be removed from your water, treatment options will depend on your water chemistry.

Red/Orange/Yellow stains

This is likely the cause of iron in your water. Iron is the most common problem here in our province. Iron is found in our geology and makes the water in our homes stain water fixtures, clothing, appliances and even our skin and hair. This problem can be remedied, although the treatment options will vary depending on the iron levels in your water chemistry.

Blue/Green Stains/Leaky plumbing

This is usually caused by acidic water that is corrosive enough to remove copper material from your homes plumbing.. Acidic water is a result of the water chemistry having a low pH. Acidic water will corrode metal over time which can degrade the plumbing in your home to the point where you will start to have leaks in your home’s plumbing system. Low pH conditions in your water can be raised to a neutral level, call us to find out how we can help.

Salty Taste

Salty tasting water happens because there are pockets of geology in Ontario that contain mineral salts which can produce a salty taste to your water. Salt can be extremely corrosive to metals contained within your home’s plumbing system. Salt can be removed, call us to see what options will work best for you.

Arsenic/Uranium Treatment

If you’ve done a laboratory test and have tested positive for arsenic or uranium, we can help you remove this from your water. If you haven’t tested your water, you should consult

These provide a provincial guide to arsenic and uranium in Nova Scotia including a map of areas where these heavy metals are common in groundwater. If you have any questions or concerns, call us for assistance.

Chlorine Smell

Chlorine is used in municipal water supplies to disinfect bacteria. Chlorine can be responsible for skin irritations and also give off a bad taste. We have options for chlorine removal from your municipally supplied water.

Bacteria

Total Coliform and E. Coli presence in the water can indicate problems with your private well. Total Coliform bacteria are not likely to cause serious illness, but can indicate that your private water supply may be vulnerable to contamination by more harmful micro-organisms such as E. Coli. E. Coli presence indicated recent fecal contamination and may also indicate presence of other disease causing pathogens such as viruses or parasites.
